Tariffs 2025

Tariffs

Canada 2025

The Liberal government has made it impossible for small businesses to survive in Canada.

The taxes are so high that two million more Canadians who have never used a food bank are now having to visit one. On top of that the Liberals under Justin Trudeau and now Mark Carney have behaved unbecomingly and down right disgracefully towards our American neighbors and their President Mr. Trump. This caused terrible discord between the countries. This has resulted in very high tariffs being imposed on Canada. I will say that every government has the right and responsibility to protect their country financially as well as their borders. I only wish my own government felt the same way as Mr. Trump!

My LYS

Yarn Traveler & Haberdashery

In the autumn of 2021 I started to build my online yarn store that supported our local indie yarn dyers as well as North American crafted needles and hooks. I knew going into the next few years would be difficult but I was optimistic and I remain so. I have plowed through anyway. I am mostly online and I also visit our local farmers market in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia.

The challenges the farmers markets face

The farmers markets in Nova Scotia and the issues we are facing from my personal point of view. Since 2022 I have watched venders from my local farmers market dwindle in sales up to and past 40-50% and it is only getting worse. These are venders who have had very successful businesses and a fine customer base only to watch their business crumble. The discouragement on their faces is palatable and I too have had to fight this feeling of failure. In 2025 the Farmers Markets of Nova Scotia a non-profit cooperative that represents the farmers' market sector in the province. They had a big meeting this year to talk about the farmers' markets and the downturn of income. They found the there was lots of attendance but people were only buying prepared foods. I am not surprise seeing as I watched this progress over the past few years and this made me worried going into 2025. If a government taxes the people to the point where they have no disposable income and all thy can do is spend a bit here and there as they try to support their fellow Canadians. The results is the destruction of our communities on all levels.

Thank you to everyone who comes to the markets

A market isn't just a place of commerce it is also my market family and an important part of our communities. I will standby my family and community come hell or high water! God bless this mess, I say!

The year 2025 has been a difficult year in business but it has also been a year of big decisions. Most importantly being my stubborn resolve to not bow to an evil government and to remain positive. I will not close my doors or veer off course. I will remain steadfast on this crazy journey of mine. I know Canada will get through these crazy years and will be stronger for it.

If anyone so wishes to help I will have digital products available (knit patterns, DTG shirt or tote art, Ex Libris book art and cell phone wall paper art on my online Shopify store as well as on Etsy store under the name YarnTravelerHabby.

I will also start to work with my own farmers' market to do likewise. I thank you for your continued support and God bless you all.

I will continue to update as things progress in Canada
